Is it deplorable to patent human genes?

Should the patenting of human genes be prohibited in all instances, or is it sometimes appropriate to attach proprietary rights to information about the human body? What if the prohibitive cost of information about the mutation of cells, for instance, keeps people from being able to receive the necessary information from a cancer screening? That prospect is referenced in the article below. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/30/business/30gene.html

    Open-source processes should definitely be applied to the further study of the human body, as everyone will benefit from the contributions of as many people as possible, but gene patenting makes it less likely that information will be shared in a constructive manner.
