Find ways to break the dependance on the "donations" teet. Its a crippling characteristic that makes them unable to deliver consistency. Small non-profits are the most afflicted by this design flaw. The economy and giving priorities change too rapidly to not have a consistent and more reliable income stream. Tax-Exempt status is a double edged sword. -
A non-profit might attract more consistent support if the larger public was invited to determine the organization's mission.1 vote by Marquis Davis-
+1 I think all types of organizations will be better served with more organic mission creation. Consideration: What if the organization is niche and wouldn't have "large" public appeal anyway?
